i like how the story shifts from simply hearing a rumour to hearing it directly from someone who actually experienced it. The fact that even an educated and knowledgeable person couldn't fully explain what happened makes the situation feel much more unsettling and leaves a lot of room for questions. The line “Why would this happen?” feels like the natural reaction when you hear something that doesn't fit into an easy explanation.
