The Distance Behind the Screen

Social media has made the world feel smaller. We can talk to anyone within seconds, see our friends’ lives, share reels, reply to stories, and stay connected even when we are far apart.
But somehow, while our online connections are growing, our real conversations seem to be disappearing.
We may have hundreds of followers but only a few people we can truly talk to. We know what someone posted yesterday, but sometimes we don't know how they are actually feeling today.
Even when people sit together, everyone can be busy looking at their own screens. A room full of people can feel strangely quiet when nobody is really present.
Social media isn't necessarily the problem. It can bring people closer, especially when distance separates them. A simple message or video call can make someone feel remembered.
The problem begins when online interaction starts replacing real connection.
Maybe we don't need to delete social media or stop using it. Maybe we just need to remember that a screen can connect two people, but real conversations make them feel close.
Sometimes, the person sitting beside us deserves more attention than the person whose story we're watching.
But what do you think? Has social media brought you closer to people—or made you feel more distant from them? Tell me in the comments.
