Every family has a detective. Someone who knows everyone’s business, remembers conversations from 2014, and can identify a relative’s new haircut from a blurry WhatsApp status.
In my family, that detective is my aunt. She doesn’t need CCTV cameras, private investigators, or advanced technology. She has WhatsApp, free time, and an extraordinary amount of curiosity.
One Sunday morning, my cousin uploaded a picture of himself at a restaurant. He was smiling, wearing sunglasses, and holding a coffee cup.
Within three minutes, my aunt commented, “Where are you?”My cousin replied, “Outside.”Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. A man with a smartphone and the communication skills of a broken doorbell.
My aunt wasn’t satisfied.“Which restaurant?”“Why?”“Just asking.”Those two words have destroyed more peace in Indian families than electricity bills.
Five minutes later, she sent the picture to our family group with a simple message: “Look where he is going nowadays.”Going where? A restaurant? A place where food is served? Call the national investigation agency!
But the real drama began when my uncle accidentally sent a message meant for my aunt into the family group.“Reached. Don’t tell anyone.”Nobody knew where he had reached. Nobody knew what we weren’t supposed to tell anyone. But suddenly, twenty-seven family members were online. My grandmother replied with a question mark.My mother called my aunt.
My cousin sent three laughing emojis. And my uncle deleted the message.Unfortunately, WhatsApp had already informed us that he had deleted it.
That notification was basically an official announcement that something interesting had happened.“Why did you delete the message?” someone asked.
“No reason,” Uncle replied. Now, obviously, there was a reason.By lunchtime, the family had developed six different theories. One person suspected a surprise gift. Another suggested he had boughtsomething expensive. My grandmother believed he was hiding a medical appointment.Meanwhile, my uncle was simply buying vegetables. He had reached the vegetable market. The family detective had never been so
disappointed. Then came the daily good-morning messages. At 6 a.m., my grandmother sent a picture of pink roses with the words, “Good morning. Stay blessed.”At 6:02 a.m., my uncle sent a picture of the sun rising over mountains.
At 6:04 a.m., someone forwarded a message claiming that drinking warm water would solve approximately every problem known to humanity. At 6:07 a.m., my cousin left the group. At 6:08 a.m., my aunt added him back.
At 6:09 a.m., he left again. This continued until everyone understood that the family group was not a communication platform. It was a compulsory subscription service with no cancellation policy.
By evening, I had muted the group.Peace at last.Or so I thought. My mother entered my room and asked, “Why aren’t you replying to the family group?”
I looked at her.She looked at me.Somewhere in the distance, my phone vibrated with another good-morning message, even though it was 9 p.m.
That day, I learnt an important lesson: you can mute a WhatsApp group, but you cannot mute your Indian family. And honestly, I don’t think anyone has invented that technology yet.
If they have, please send me the link privately. My aunt must never find out.
