Things I Never Said

Things I Never Said

A story about the unspoken changes people fail to notice—the shorter replies, hidden hurt, fading effort, and silence that slowly replaces closeness. Sometimes, all we want is for someone to notice and simply ask, “Are you okay?”

Maybe You Would’ve Noticed

Maybe You Would’ve Noticed

There’s one question I’ve wanted to ask someone for a really long time.
But I never did.
Not because I was scared of the answer. Maybe I was scared of what the answer would change.
The question is simple:
“Did you ever notice?”
Did you ever notice when my replies became shorter because something you said hurt me?
Did you notice when I stopped telling you little things about my day?
Did you notice that I used to wait for your messages, even when I pretended I didn’t care?
Did you notice how many times I said “it’s okay” when it really wasn’t?
And most importantly, did you ever notice that I was slowly becoming quieter around you?
Sometimes I wonder if people actually notice these things or if they only realize them once you’re completely gone.

Maybe that’s the strange part about relationships and friendships. We expect people to understand the things we never say out loud.
We want them to notice the pause before our reply, the change in our tone, the sudden silence, the “I’m fine” that clearly doesn’t sound fine.
But maybe people aren’t mind readers.
Maybe sometimes you have to say what hurts before expecting someone to understand it.
Still, a small part of me wishes that some people could just look at us and know.
No explanation.
No argument.
Just—
“I noticed. Are you okay?”
And honestly, that one sentence can mean more than people realize.

What’s one thing you wish someone had noticed without you having to say it?
