Today I want to throw light on an episode of the show. While the rage of iPhone was new, Hannah Montana rode of this craze and created an episode towards it. It showed that Miley's classmates and a few high profile fans of Hannah Montana are carrying the latest O phone. Miley feels defeated when she sees that despite being successful she still has an old phone. She tries to convince her dad to get her the latest phone, but Robby reluctantly does not approve to get the new phone. He warns her not flow with the crowd and trends.
At that time I felt how important the lesson of this episode was. Mobile phones were new back then. Every week new phones or models were getting launched. There were some people who had been constantly buying new phones (a few of my classmates included). This was making every youngster anxious, thinking that they were not at par with the latest trends and technology. A lot of my friends too had been feeling dejected because they did not have the latest phone.
As I grew up I realised that this lesson was not limited only for phones. It was applicable to every thing. Subtly but that episode questioned the ever changing trends, fast fashion, over consumption, and the pressure to keep up with trends. I see how relevant these topics are even today. In today's world the trends are changing each and every day. What would have been trending yesterday if a stale news today. Everyday new styles and standards are getting introduced. It does not mean that we should adapt to each and every style. We need to understand that trends will come and go. We should not run behind every single trend. This is when I realised that how far ahead Hannah Montana was from its time.
I believe especially in today's world these lessons are important. We need to control our urge for getting new things and being in trend. It does not a matter if whatever you are using is from years ago as long as it serves its function. It does not matter if it is old yet it works as required. It would hardly matter if it is not as per today's aesthetics but it still looks and functions as desired. It is important that we should not surrender ourself to the trends.
Also I believe it was a lesson for stopping the impulse purchases because of the constantly evolving and changing styles and trends. I realised this in my 30s that how important it is that everything that we possess functions rather than staying in style. If it is stylish or a trendy but it does not function then my money is wasted. This is why I believe that it is better to stick with what works rather than what is currently trending.
Of course I am not against progress or change. However that does not mean whenever a change would take place I would discard my belonging to get something only because it is trending. This was one of the lessons from Hannah Montana that resonated with me. And I believe that this lesson is required right now more than ever.
When a new trend emerges, it's better to
