Panchathanthiram

Id J had to recommend a Tamil move that never fails to make me laugh no matter how many times I watch it Panchathanthiram would be the top of my list. Directed by K S Ravikumar and written by Crazy Mohan sir, the film is masterclass jm comedy confusion timing and unforgettable characters. Even after morning ethan two decades it remains one of the funniest and most re-watch able movies in tamil cinema.

The story revolves around Ramachandran played brilliantly by Kamal Hassan and his four close friends. What begins as a seemingly harmless trip soon spirals into a series of misunderstandings involving a mysterious women and a dead body and hidden money and suspecious police officers and countless lies told to escape trouble. The plot keeps getting more chaotic with every passing minute yet it never becomes difficult to follow. Instead the confusion becomes the source of the film's comedy.

The greatest strength of Panchathanthiram is its humour. Unlike many comedy films that rely on few jokes this movie is packed with witty dialogue and clever wordplay and situational comedy and perfectly timed reaction. Crazy Mohan sir's writing is exceptional and nearly every scene contains a memorable line or a comedic moment. What makes the comedy even more impressive is that it remaiydresh even after multiple viewing. Knowing the punchline beforehand somehow makes the scenes funnier.

The chemistry between the five friends is another reason the film works so well. Kamal Hassan and Jaya Ram and Ramesh Aravind and Simran and Yogi Sethu feel like a genuine group of longtime friends. Their interactions are natural and chaotic and incredibly entertaining. Each character has a distinct personality which ensures that everyone contributes something unique to the story. Watching them trying desperately trying to cover up one mistake after another is an absolute delight.


The supporting cast also deserve a praise. Simran beings charm and elegance to her role while Nagesh and Ramya Krishnan and the rest of the ensemble add the fun. No character feels water and each one contribute to the chain of misunderstandings that drives the plot further.

By the final act the number of lies and secrets and misunderstanding gas become enormous. Yet the movie manages to untangle everything in satisfying and hilarious manner. The climax reels like a reward for patiently following the madness and bringing together all the characters and story line in a way that is both funny and incredibly hilarious in way that works.

I would recommend Panchathanthiram to anyone who loves comedy. It is not just another funny movie but one of the finest examples of how great writing and perfect casting and brilliant timing can create something Endless. Even years after its release it continues to make audiences laughs and that is why it remains as one of my favourite movies of all time.
