Every family has secrets, and in my house, the biggest mystery is always the disappearance of food. One evening, my mother prepared a box of
delicious sweets and announced, “Nobody touches these. They are for tomorrow’s guests.”Naturally, everyone nodded with the
seriousness of people signing an international peace treaty. Two hours later, the box was empty. My mother stood in the kitchen, staring at it as if she had just discovered a crime scene.
“WHO ATE THE SWEETS?”Silence. My father suddenly became fascinated by the television. My brother developed an urgent interest in his schoolbooks. Even the family dog looked suspicious, despite having absolutely no access to the refrigerator.
I decided to investigate. As the eldest daughter, I believed I possessed the necessary intelligence, maturity, and detective skills to solve this case.
First, I questioned my brother.“Where were you at 6 PM?”“Studying.”“What were you studying?”
“Studying.”“What were you studying?”“Science.”“Which chapter?”He stared at me.I stared at him.“Exactly,” I announced. “Suspicious.”
Next, I questioned my father.“Did you eat the sweets?”He looked offended. “Why would I eat sweets secretly?”
This was a terrible defence. He had once hidden an entire packet of biscuits inside his wardrobe.I wrote his name on my imaginary suspect list.
Finally, I questioned my mother.“Are you absolutely sure you put the sweets in this box?”She gave me a look that could have ended my detective career before it began.
I searched the kitchen, inspected the refrigerator, and even checked the dustbin for evidence. Nothing. Then my grandmother walked in.
“What are you all doing?”“We are investigating the disappearance of the sweets,” I explained proudly. She blinked. “Which sweets?”
“The ones you took upstairs to give to the neighbours.”Everyone turned towards her.She paused.“Oh! I forgot to tell you.”For three seconds, nobody spoke.
My brother burst out laughing. My father returned to watching television, looking suspiciously relieved. My mother closed the empty box with the exhaustion of someone
who had raised an entire criminal organisation. And me?I had interrogated innocent family members, conducted a full investigation, and nearlydestroyed household relationships over sweets that had never been stolen. That evening, I learned an important lesson: before accusing your family of a crime, check whether your grandmother has already distributed the evidence.I also learned that being a detective requires patience, intelligence, and excellent communication skills.
Unfortunately, I had none of these. But at least I had a new career option: investigating who finished the last packet of chips.
In my family, every mystery has a solution, every suspect has an excuse, and every investigation ends with Mom saying, “Bas, ab drama band karo!” 😂
