I don't usually smile at strangers . It's not that I dislike people. I just don't see a reason to smile at someone I dont know. If we're strangers, we're strangers.
We pass each other , continue with our lives, nand that's usually the end of it. I never really questioned this. A stranger's face is just another face in a crowd. Until one day. I looked at a baby.
The baby was sitting with there parent. Looking around at everything with that completely innocent curiosity babies seem to have. The baby looked at me. I looked back. And without thinking about it. I smiled.
It wasn't planned. There was no reason behind it. I wasn't trying to be friendly or make an impression. I just smiled.
And then the baby smiled back.btjat was it. Nothing dramatic happened. No music started playing in the background.
Nobody around us noticed. The baby probably forgot about me within the next thirty seconds. But somehow, that tiny interaction stayed with me for the rest of the day . It genuinely made my day better.
And I found that strangely interesting. How could something so small affect me so much? I hadn't had a conversation with this baby. I didn't know their name.i didn't know their family.
I didn't know anything about the.bi simply gave them a smile. And they returned it . But for those few seconds, two complete strangers acknowledged each other's existence. Maybe that's a something we don't do enough.
We live surrounded by people but behave as though everyone else is background scenery. On buses. In elevators. On roads. In shops.
At college. At work. Hundreds of people can pass us in a single day and we barely look at them. We protect ourselves behind headphones, phones, tired expressions and the universal rule of "please don't make eye contact". And honestly. I understand why.
You cannot smile at everyone. You don't own strangers your attention. You should have boundaries . And sometimes people genuinely don't want interaction.
But that doesn't mean every interaction has to be meaningful to be valuable.. that smile reminded me uf something.wmbarrassimgly simple. Being kind doesn't always require effort. It can be a smile. Holding sb door.
Saying thank you. Letting someone go ahead. Asking someone if they'll okay. Small things that cost almost nothing can sometimes change.
Someone 's mood. And perhaps the best part is that kindness can be strangely selfish in the nicest possible way.
I smiled at that baby. The baby smiled at me. And somehow I walked away happier. I didn't receive anything . I didn't gain anything.
Nobody praised me. But my mood changed . For the rest of the day. I noticed myself feeling lighter. Maybe that's why I want to remember this moment . Not because it was extraordinary.
Because, it wasn't. It was probably one of the smallest moments of my day. But maybe we underestimate small moments because we expect meaningful experiences to arrive dramatically. We expect happiness to come from achievements, celebrations, important conversations, or major life events.

Sometimes it comes from a baby who has absolutely no idea that they just improved your entire day. And maybe tomorrow I'll go back to not smiling at strangers. I'll probably walk past hundreds of people without saying anything . That's okay.
But now I know that occasionally, there is nothing to lose by offering a little warmth to someone when happens to cross my path.bbecaiae sometimes you give a stranger a smile expecting nothing back. And they give you one back . And somehow for a few seconds, the world feels a little less like a place full of strangers.

When a stranger offers you a small kindness, you
