If there were an Olympic competition for household activities, I genuinely believe Indian families would win every medal.
And the best part? Nobody trains for these events. We are simply born into the competition.
Let’s begin with the first event: The Art of Recognising Guests Before They Arrive.
The moment someone announces, “Guests are coming in ten minutes,” the entire household transforms into a professional cleaning agency.
People who haven’t touched a broom in three months suddenly become cleanliness inspectors. Someone is adjusting curtains, someone is wiping already clean tables, and someone is shouting instructions like they are managing a military operation. The guests haven’t even arrived, but the house has already experienced three natural disasters.
Next comes the second event: The Remote Control Championship. There can be five people in the room and absolutely nobody wants to watch the same thing. One wants cricket, another wants the news, someone wants a serial, and the youngest member is desperately trying to watch YouTube.
The remote becomes more valuable than family property. Then comes the legendary third event: The Disappearing Object Mystery.
“Where are my glasses?”“Where is my phone?”“Who took my charger?”These questions are asked at least fifteen times a day.
The funniest part is that the person asking is usually holding the missing object. Sometimes the phone is literally in their hand while they are using someone else’s phone to call it.
Even Sherlock Holmes would resign from this investigation. The fourth event deserves international recognition: The Weather Forecast Department.
One person looks outside and announces that it might rain. Another checks the sky and disagrees. Someone immediately brings
clothes from the balcony, while another insists that the sun is still shining.Five minutes later, everyone is standing near the window like a group of meteorologists waiting for breaking news
And finally, the most competitive event of all: The Indian Mother Calling You From Another Room. She will call your name once.
You respond, “Yes?”No answer. She calls again. You say, “Coming!”Still no answer. You finally walk into the room, and she asks you to bring something that was approximately two centimetres away from her hand.Congratulations! You have completed the final round.Honestly, our homes are not just places where we live. They are comedy theatres where every family member has a permanent role, nobody knows the script, and somehow the show never ends.
And the best part? We complain about all this chaos, but the moment we spend a day away from home, we start missing it.
Perhaps family is just a group of people who irritate each other professionally but cannot function without each other.

Oh man, this is how it is in every Indian household. After we rearrange everything and we are happy with progress, mothers announce that it looks atrocious and rearrange everything. Then they tell others, "nobody helps me". 🤷🏻‍♀️
